How to Make a Character Turnaround Sheet, Step by Step
From picking a reference photo to compositing the final angles into one file.
A turnaround sheet shows a character from multiple angles — usually front, 3/4, side, and back — so anyone working from it can understand the character's proportions and design from every direction, not just the one angle they happened to see first.
1. Start with one clean reference
Pick a single, clear image of the character — good lighting, face and upper body visible, nothing else in frame competing for attention. Every other angle will be generated or drawn from this one, so its quality sets the ceiling for everything downstream.
2. Lock the front view first
Treat the front view as your anchor. If you're generating with AI, this is the shot every other angle should reference back to — not each other, and not a fresh text description. If you're drawing, this is the proportion reference you'll measure every other angle against.
3. Generate or draw the remaining angles
Work through 3/4, side, and back, checking each one against the front view as you go rather than waiting until all four are done to notice one drifted. Small differences — hairline, outfit details, proportions — are easier to catch and fix one angle at a time.
4. Add expressions if you need them
A full reference set usually pairs the angle turnaround with a handful of expressions (neutral, smile, angry, surprised is a common baseline) — these aren't strictly part of the "turnaround" but usually live on the same sheet.
5. Composite into one file
The final step is arranging all the angles into a single image — the actual "model sheet" file you'd hand to a collaborator or use as a drawing reference, rather than a folder of separate images.
